BLUE CARREON
Behind the seams

In the early part of 2000, bag making became the go-to career of many housewives. Some succeeded but countless failed and were forgotten almost as soon as they went on the market. But here are designers from Asia who have made successful strides in the handbag business. These women, who are as beautiful as their designs, have proven that a unique product with a strong point of view, and in-depth understanding of your target market, can help you create a brand that can compete in the global marketplace.

What:
 Kotur

Backstory:
Fiona Kotur started her thriving bag business with bolts of vintage brocade she happened upon a fabric factory in China. She made a few clutches, which sold well, and the rest is bag history. She could be held solely responsible for the revival of the minaudiere, which has since become a favorite of socialites and red-carpet regulars.

Competitive advantage:
“Kotur is unique in that we are an American brand based in Hong Kong, enabling us to have intimate control over sourcing and manufacturing. Living (here) also allows me to incorporate indigenous details and findings within a Western vernacular. Kotur organically combines cultures and perspectives when incorporating materials and inspirations.

Product extensions:
Kotur currently has a collaboration with J. Crew. She also did a capsule home collection with Shanghai Tang.
