Long a colour associated more with childrenswear than adults, how to pull of proper brights whilst still seeming chic still presents a bit of a conundrum, however. Taking our cue from the Mrs Burch and Herrera, however, there is a route through the chaos that can be citrus to a chic summer look. Using simple, sleek and feminine shapes in knockout brights creates a summery fashion wardrobe sure to make a statement and tick the trend boxes, too. Here are three ways we’ll be working the Citrus look.

1. Lemon Yellow:  In perhaps the easiest iteration of citrus, lemon yellow as seen at Diane von Furstenberg manages to be bright and pretty all at the same time. Go for minimal, clean shapes, avoid anything fussy and pair with sleek metallic accessories to keep it looking sophisticated. 2. Tangerine Dream: As shown by Carolina Herrera, there is nothing that needn’t be sophisticated about orange, you just have to pick you hue and shape carefully. Stick to romantic, feminine silhouettes with a touch of embellishment, think burnt rather than bright orange, and work in heavy gold accessories for a decadent, glamorous take on dressing that’s perfect for summer nights. Designers know that better than anyone, that’s why we’ve all gone long on it for this season, updating previous lace silhouettes and items with a freshness that makes them particularly 2013. Key to working the trend for now are certain items and colours. Lace separates are particularly hot right now (and much easier to wear than a top to toe look,) minimal takes on the trend are the way to go for those who take their pretty without too much touch of the fuss, or lace dresses in strong colours give the full on look for those ready really take the plunge into what is arguably spring’s prettiest look.                        Here are three ways we’ll be working it.

1. Minimal Lace:

Think lace and you don’t have to think over the top. As seen at Ports 1961, loose shapes and simple lace details give enough of the look without submitting to the full on effect. Giambatista Vialli’s knockout cocktail dress is the super sophisticated take on the look, or try Miu Miu and Carven for dresses that nod to the theme without being too fussy. Finish off with simple, clean accessories and you’re set. 2. Special Separates:

As seen at Temperley, for those nervous of the overall lace effect, this Spring’s tops prove the perfect way to dip a toe into the trend. And, if spank me style outfits, strict leather pencil skirts and tight leather pants might be the last thing on some people’s minds when it comes to choosing some easy, seasonal updates, there are actually some sunny surprises currently up designers sleeves. Whilst leather may have played a key part on Spring 2013 runways, it came in relaxed shapes, cool colours and sophisticated silhouettes that take it all out of the tacky and into the really rather chic. 1. Punchy and Pretty: As shown at Tibi, a touch of brightly coloured leather in a feminine shape brings this wintry fabric straight into spring. Pair a bright coloured leather skirt with a simple, structured top and clean accessories for a look that’s punchy with a touch of the pretty. 2. Daytime Chic: Taking your cue from DKNY, an pencil skirt in white leather is the perfect easy item for day. Supersleek Shift: If leather dresses sounds a tiny bit scary, take your lead from Loewe and yours textured, in a relaxed shape and in simple block colour for the sophisticated way to do the top to toe look. DKNY’s perforated white leather and leather and jersey panelled numbers nod to the look without seeming too risque, or check out Jonathan Simkhai’s for a sleek number to take you from day to night. Catwalk confections of lilac, lemon and lace were a big feature at the Spring Summer 2013 shows and are almost an even bigger feature now as they hit shop floors. But, pretty as they are, pastels often throw up some dressing conundrums – pairing them together (as this season dictates) can prove a bit of a sartorial minefield, choosing the right shape for a lemon yellow lace confection, another – and how to do head to toe pink when you’re past the age of 12, yet another still. Luckily, pastels for 2013 come with slight modifications. Texture, colour blocking and minimal shapes all play a part in dragging them out of little girl territory and into the here and rather hip now. Here are three catwalk inspired ways we’ll be working the look. Click through our gallery for images of the looks detailed below.

1. Try a bit of texture: Taking your cue from Erdem, the young British designer and current king of lace, textured pastels (be they lace or jacquard) lend a little bit of edge to a simple, pretty coloured shift. 2.  Minimal chic: One way of making sure your pastels still mean business is by opting for sleek, minimal looks in soft neutral colours that are as slick and they are pretty. Mrs Beckham is the champion of this look, of simple, structured shift dresses cut with sporty details and that fall beneath the knee. Finish with sleek chrome accessories (that lend a touch of the tough,) and you’re set. 3. Trophy Trousers: As Jenna Lyons at J Crew has been ably modelling for seasons now, there’s nothing like a statement trouser to spruce up a daytime outfit. Jacquard pastel pants with a touch of the brights about them work well colour blocked with similar shades to give a look that’s pretty but not too dressy. Pair yours with a simple silk tee and some vintage inspired accessories and you have the look down pat. We’re too excited to keep it completely hidden until then, though. So here’s a little precursor of the pieces to come, some thoughts on the collection, and also our Kotur illustrations, done for us every year by my very own mother.

With springtime comes florals, but at Kotur we approached this classic theme from a new direction for SS13. Embarking on a more unusual garden tour, we opened the door to a more surreal natural world, finding beauty and surprise in new ways, with new materials, and with bursts of shocking color.

Through a series of micro collections, Cyber Garden, Secret Garden, Savage Garden, Pop Garden and Retro Garden, you’ll find classic shapes reworked and re-imagined. There’s our classic Espey minaudiere in gold plate and smattered in confectionary looking flowers. We created sequin flower ‘bonnets’, covering minaudieres to look like jeweled, vintage swim caps. Neon treads over floral jacquards give an unexpected look that’s pretty and cool in equal bounds. African printed fabrics and colored python lend a tribal take, or for the ultimate pop of color, neon sequined patchworks give plenty of bang for their buck.

The overall effect is supernatural, super pretty, a bit off-balance and perfect for a pop of color. It’s a season in which to find what you fancy where you least expect it. We hope you have as much fun doing that as we have.
