KOTUR is never one to shy from a red carpet, especially when carried by the talented and beautiful Nicole Kidman, as seen at the Screen Actors Guild awards last week.

We are huge fans of Nicole Kidman, her elegant but unapologetic approach that colors every aspect of her life, and she has a sense of mischief that is brilliant. A unique style is something we love to celebrate, and we love women who are not afraid to make their own statements in their own ways.

The Rat Pack: Haunts and Hangouts

In our Fall collection, we hung out with the Rat Pack, paying a visit via our moodboard to some of their favorite haunts as we put together a collection that borrowed more than a little from their golden age of glamor. In a time when going out was a big event, one that called for the outfits, accessories and antics to match, the supper clubs, casinos and hotels that Sinatra and his gang chose to frequent became almost as famous as their patrons. Their bars, nightclubs and décor are now almost as iconic as the people who crossed their thresholds. Here, we round up three of the Rat Pack’s very favorite spots, a group of hotels every bit as famous, glamorous and stylish as the stars they hosted.

The Sands, Las Vegas

No place quite epitomizes the Rat Pack heyday more than the Sands Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas. Open from 1952 until 1996, it was their hangout of choice on the Strip – both as a hotel and as a casino – whilst it’s Copa Room saw everyone from Frank Sinatra to Sammy Davis JR and Nat King Cole perform as well as the recording of the main man’s live Sinatra at the Sands album. Décor wise the hotel was a beacon of mid century modern, complete with its iconic and huge roadside sign – still the stuff of legend. This season, we have referenced its design elements heavily, taking our cue from its opulent glamor in minaudiéres such as our Lady Luck, Lucky Dice and our Bacall Full Deck. Bought in the 1960’s by Howard Hughes, the Sands fell into decline in the 1970’s, and was finally torn down in 1996 to make way for the Venetian, heralding the end of an era and all it represented on the Strip. In it’s day, however, it was simply the tops.

The Beverly Hills Hotel

The Rat Pack by no means discovered the Beverly Hills hotel – the ‘Pink Palace,’ had played host to the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Fred Astaire and John Wayne as after opening in 1912 way before they came along – but in its 1950’s heyday it became known as their LA haunt. Sinatra, Bogart, Martin and the gang – including Monroe and Bacall – were often to be found in its famous bar, the Polo Lounge. Legend has it that is was there that Lauren Bacall actually coined the term Rat Pack, having discovered her husband and his crew in situ after a long drinking session. The iconic pink building was – and still is – set in a garden resplendent with exotic palms and plants. With it’s famous Martinique banana leaf wallpaper, striped sun loungers, jewel tones and swirling signage, it was a beacon of Hollywood Regency style. This season, our Lady Luck in pink steals a little from that, whilst our Perspex inlaid minaudiéres are just the sort of glamor pusses you might choose to accompany you for your own night out at the Polo Lounge.

The Fontainebleau, Miami

The iconic curved building and palm fringed pool of Miami Beach’s Fontainebleau Hotel has starred in almost as many movies as the many celebrities that have passed through its doors over the years. Opened in 1954, it quickly became Sinatra et al’s Miami HQ, it’s La Ronde nightclub a favorite destination for an evening jaunt. Sinatra visited so much so that the hotel started a special, “Cocktails and Breakfast with Frankie,” promotion when he was in town, giving guests the option of a cocktail fuelled meet and greet with the man himself of a morning. Steeped in Art Deco golden glamor, the hotel came to represent that particularly decadent, deco style approach that was de rigeur back then. With its chequerboard floors, huge chandeliers and sweeping staircases, the Fontainbleau more than reflected the most luxurious design of its era. Our geometric Fitzgerald and Merrick minaudiéres take those famous deco motifs and reimagine them for now, giving a little bit of that golden era glamour we all can always do with a sprinkling of.

KOTUR joins Vogue China’s 10th Anniversary Party in Shanghai

This week in Shanghai, starlets and bright young things joined Vogue China’s Editor-in-Chief, and our KOTUR MUSE Angelica Cheung, in celebrating the magazine’s 10th year anniversary. We were delighted to have made our way into the party and on the arms of actresses Xulu, Lin Peng, and supermodels Jing Wen, Emma Pei, Sayo Akasaka and Sasha Pivovarova.

World of KOTUR: Audrey Hepburn – Portraits of an Icon

There are some women whose personality and style so inform their physical beauty that the look they are famous for is synonymous with their character. Audrey Hepburn is one of those women. A timeless beauty and paragon of elegance both inside and out, hers is a face we could look at time and time again, finding new inspiration in her spirit and her style no matter how iconic her image has become.

At KOTUR, as keen followers of Oscar Wilde’s brilliant quote, “Be yourself, everyone else is taken,” we are always huge admirers of women who have forged their own way through life. Hepburn survived a childhood in war-torn Holland before starting out as a ballerina in London. She went on to become one of the most famous actresses Hollywood ever produced, only to turn her back on it pretty conclusively for a life as a mother and humanitarian. And she did it all inimitably and unforgettably her way. Whether you look at her career or her fashion choices, the ones she made were distinctly hers and hers alone. It is this strength of character that makes her such an indelible person in all of our minds. It doesn’t matter which era you look at her from – or in – Audrey Hepburn always seems somehow the same.

The opportunity to look at just such images has come about again with the launch at the National Portrait Gallery in London of a new exhibition, Audrey Hepburn: Portraits of an Icon. What makes this show so special are the many previously unseen portraits being shown alongside the well known taken by Irving Penn, Norman Parkinson and Cecil Beaton. Featuring a large collection of photographs from her sons’ private collections for the first time, this exhibition shows Hepburn the star as well as Hepburn the person. You will find photographs of her dancing as a teenager, or clutching a bunch of flowers as a young girl, her behind the scenes and off duty, not being ‘Audrey Hepburn’ but simply being herself. What’s truly striking, however, is how little difference there is between the two. As this exhibition shows, the essence of what was so attractive about her – her steady, honest gaze, her unique look, her entirely unpretentious sense of style – shone through no matter what the circumstances or time of her life she found herself in. On such things is true beauty built. Hepburn more than proves it.

World of KOTUR: As seen at the MET

We were beyond proud to escort Wendi Murdoch, Hannah Davis and Nasiba Adilova down the red carpet at this week’s Met Ball celebrating China: Through the Looking Glass. Each chose to carry our Birdcage Clutch as their friend for the evening, finishing off their outstanding looks with our own Chinoiserie inspired design.

Other previous sightings include Rashida Jones and Lauren Santo Domingo, who were also spotted with our birdcage bag.

Ladies, you all looked fabulous.

The World of KOTUR: Stylist Joey Tierney on getting Red Carpet Ready

As a celebrity stylist who’s been in the game for over a decade, Joey Tierney knows a thing or two about preparing for the red carpet. Whether she’s been dressing the likes of Jaime Pressly, Kristen Bell and Audrina Partridge, or appearing as an expert for Access Hollywood Live, or E!’s Fashion, she has more than garnered the inside track on getting it right on the night. Here, she shares her key tips with us.

Q: On the heels of the Academy Awards, how do you recommend people prepare for the red carpet?

Eat clean, workout and drink A LOT of water! Also, make sure you book your hair and make-up team as soon as possible! It’s all about your complete look when on the red carpet.

Q: When it comes to picking the look, what are your golden rules?

It’s important for people to pay attention to trends but dress for their body type.

Q: What’s your signature style for hair and make up?

Hair and Make-up vary with each outfit. I typically like really sleek hairstyles to keep the look chic and sophisticated.

Q: How should one accessorize?

Again, it varies from look to look but my general rule is to break up your statement pieces. If you are wearing statement earrings you don’t want to wear a statement necklace as well.

Q: What should one always carry in one’s bag?

I always carry my phone (of course), lip-gloss, top stick, a powder puff and a breath mint.

Q: Are there special contingency plans for any last minute outfit malfunctions?

Always have a back-up outfit!

Q: What are your special tricks of the trade?

I always have my clients shoes stretched so that they are comfortable on their big night, and if there are alterations that need to be done to your dress, always try it on a second time! That way they can correct any issues such as a hem that is too short or long.

Lucky enough to accompany a stunning array of stars to everything from the Oscars to the Met Ball, the Golden Globes to the Emmys, our minaudières and clutches have attended some of the most fabulous parties out there on the arms of some of the most glamorous women.
